What VoIP and SIP actually stand for so first VoIP stands for voice over Internet Protocol and sip stands for session initiation protocol, they are usually referred to as IP systems or Internet Protocol systems. The word ‘protocol’ is often used when it comes to internet communication. The word protocol in this context it’s simply a set of rules that govern how the elements for particular technologies speak to each other.
It just makes sure that all the bits of the technology are talking the same language.
VoIP and SIP
SIP and VoIP simply govern and set up and transmission of voice calls over the internet. Also, it’s important to remember that while IP systems are designed to make telephone calls over the internet, and therefore they can communicate with other IP systems, they can also communicate with traditional networks, also via the mobile networks and can communicate with all types of different internet device.
For VoIP all you need is any device that is connected to internet which have microphone and speaker. As the call are made over you internet, so you have no time restriction like traditional telecom calls. Also, calls via internet are free, all you need to pay for is your internet connection. If you’re a small business or large organization or just an average person internet calls can save you a lot of money.
SIP stands for sessions Initiation Protocol is used for both video and voice calls and also used for instant messaging.
To know more about SIP, check Difference between SDP and Session Initiation Protocol. In brief VoIP is controlled by SIP, or you can say VoIP is subset of SIP.
How Internet calls are different from traditional cellular calls

Traditionally, telephone calls were made using something called circuit switching this is where a circuit is created when you lift a handset and make communication with a network in which you can hear a dialing tune to tell you that you’re in contact with the public network, that network will then transfer your call to the recipients when the recipient lifts their receiver a circuit is created and the circuit remains open throughout the call. And when the circuit is broken, the call comes to an end.
With IP systems a system called packet switching is in use and this is where your voice is broken down into small packets of data which are transmitted by the internet using much the same system as a music file or email. They may not all go the same way, but they will all end up at the recipients phone and when they get to the recipients phone they will be reassembled back into your voice.
Requirements for Internet calling
For internet calling which is done using voip, you’ll need to consider a number of factors, the first one of those is bandwidth. Does your current internet connection have enough bandwidth? If you’re certain you’ll need to check with your service provider to make sure that it’s enough or what you want to do with it.f
Another thing you’ll need to check is your router, does your route to have the capability, the quality and the power it needs for Internet calling? A lot of good IP systems can be let down by the use of a poor Router. Bad internet connections is a big problem in many countries, but if you’ve stable internet connections with around 512kbps or 1mbps, you’ll be just fine.
How can business save money with VoIP
If you’ve got a slightly larger organization you might decide to have separate internet connections for voice and data, so there are many advantages to making telephone calls over the internet, and one of those ad vantages is the wide range of phones and devices that you can get to make those telephone calls.
If you’ve not some large organization you can just use third party apps like what’s app or telegram, these are usually not recommend if you’re a professional.
There is an IP phone which looks much like a traditional phone sitting on your desk, and all have all the functionality that you would expect from a business telephone and that functionality would include things like call forward and hold will have the hands-free speaker facility. It will have the speed dialing facility, and it will also have an LCD screen which will help you with navigating all the different functions. But you can use a usual smartphone for this.
